One example of a successful animation is the animated series Usop Sontorian, which is about the adventures of children in the village of Parit Sontor, Johor.
“At first people felt Usop Santorian was just a run-of-the-mill children’s story but it’s actually of international standard and has been dubbed in Spanish for the South American market because South Americans can relate to the story and lives of the characters in it,” said Hasrul Nadzrin Shah, MDeC manager for Industry and Policy Research.
Usop Sontorian was created by 1989 by Kharisma Pictures(?)(bukan sepatutnya di tulis created by KARTUNIS UJANG ke?and one more thing..I done it in 1984..and publish on 1985) , owned by Michael Lum and Othman Hj. Yusof. Othman grew up in Parit Sontor and gave it the name.
At the time, Kamn Ismail ran Kharisma Pictures and the rights to Usop Sontorian were sold to Fine Animation, which subsequently sold it to RTM and it was first aired on TV1 in 1991.
“While RTM holds the rights, it allows the supplier to sell it overseas, provided they get its permission, and about five to eight years ago, it was dubbed into English and screened overseas under the title, The Adventures of Usop,” said Kamn, now managing director of Quest Animations, who was spoke at the Creativity Art Technology Conference at Technology Park purely from the historical perspective.
“I later saw it advertised at Cannes in France and it was later dubbed into Spanish and other languages,” he added.
A former computer programmer with Risda and computer marketing executive with Rediffusion, now Datuk Othman Hj. Yusof went on to established Moy Publications, which publishes the popular Ujang and APO illustrated humour magazines.
